Garanti Bank of Turkey is one of Europe’s most influential banking groups. Garanti commission ‘i-am’ to create a new branch experience that was fresh, dynamic and innovative taking learning from the very best of retail design.
The New Co-operative Bank of India wanted to keep the strongest elements of its history and its values and yet create an experience that would be more relevant to today’s Mumbai-based personal and business banking customer.
Abbey (now part of Spain’s Santander) previously commissioned us to create a completely new and innovative customer experience within the industry. We answered with a new brand identity, visual expression and Interior design that incorporated Costa Coffee into the branches. We worked with Abbey to roll this design out nationally as well as working together on their everything from their card designs to product selling literature.

 For some time, I’ve been planning to visit the new Metro Bank in Holborn, London. Billed as the first new high street bank to start in the UK for 100 years, Metro Bank is supposedly geared around providing a great customer service, with longer opening hours and speedier account opening

This week, with an hour to spare between meetings in the area, I decided to go in, and had an enlightening experience.
The interior design of the physical environment should always be an embodiment of your brand, culture and the type of experience you want to create. It is immediately obvious, therefore, that Metrobank sees itself as being a bit different to the older, stuffier styles of our more traditional high street banks.

Yet, this is not necessarily to its benefit. The very first impression I had, when walking into the store, was that it felt more like a casino than a bank. And not the grand Las Vegas type of casino, either, but the small town beachfront mega-arcade. With plush red stairs sweeping up to a mezzanine, a granite counter and cash machines proclaiming themselves to be “magic money machines”, I wondered whether the sense of fun would translate into a solid business model?
In short, will a bank (aimed at keeping your money safe) that feels like a casino (aimed at making you spend all your money) give consumers the feeling of safety and security they are looking for in austere times when even the big banks are failing?
